The UAMS Medical Center  Jones Eye Institute Building

The UAMS Medical Center serves as the primary clinical teaching site for the UAMS College of Medicine. It is an acute-care referral center with 400 licensed beds. More than 14,000 patients are admitted each year with more than 400,000 outpatient visits made to the Outpatient Center and the Arkansas Cancer Research Center. As the state’s only academic medical sciences center, UAMS Medical Center is on the forefront of new technologies.

Jones Eye Institute’s Eye Clinic passed the 22,000 mark in annual patient visits after only one year in the new 100,000 square foot building! Today, about 37,000 patients visit the 15,000 square-foot clinic’s over 70 eye lanes and 11 special procedure rooms each year.

Arkansas Children’s Hospital

Arkansas Children’s Hospital, a private, non-profit institution, is the only pediatric medical center in the state. It is a tertiary care, regional referral center and one of the 10 largest pediatric hospitals in the country. ACH, a 269-bed facility, admits more than 9,300 young patients each year, and more than 185,000 outpatient visits are made to the hospital’s 72 specialty clinics annually.  Arkansas Childrens Hospital

The ACH Eye Clinic is one of the busiest clinics at the hospital with more than 7,300 visits annually. Five full-time pediatric ophthalmology faculty members – as of July 2018, a certified orthoptist, an optometrist, and excellent nursing and administrative personnel staff the Eye Clinic. The new, 11,000 square-foot clinic has 17 examination lanes and accommodates an average volume of 600 patients per month. Two ophthalmology residents are on rotation at ACH at all times.

John L. Memorial Veterans Medical Center

Completed and dedicated in 1984, the VA Medical Center is located on the south side of the UAMS campus. A major affiliate in UAMS teaching programs, the “VA” has 1,109 licensed beds, annual admissions that exceed 16,000, and nearly 300,000 outpatient visits annually.

At the VA Ophthalmology Clinic, three Ophthalmology residents take charge of an active (900 patients per month) outpatient clinic, manage the consultation service, and perform surgery under the supervision of faculty. (Last year, the UAMS Ophthalmology residents had the highest surgical volume in the country!)
